Signature management, thermal protection and fire safety

Protective systems are judged on the things a civilian spec never asks for: how a surface reads in the infrared, how much smoke a burning composite gives off in a sealed compartment, and whether a material holds together under a short, violent heat pulse. Magnesium compounds serve in all three.

01Signature management

Optical and infrared. MgO is used as a whitening and high-NIR-reflectance pigment in camouflage coatings. By tuning reflectance in the near-infrared, a coating can sit much closer to the natural background when viewed through night-vision and thermal-imaging equipment, rather than appearing as a dark or bright anomaly.

Radar. Nano-scale MgO is studied and used as a component of radar-absorbing / stealth coating systems, where controlled particle size and dielectric behaviour help attenuate the incident microwave energy instead of reflecting it.

02Thermal protection and refractoriness

With a melting point above 2,800 °C, MgO is a natural choice wherever a short, intense heat load has to be survived: thermal protection layers, ablative and refractory components, and the high-temperature linings used in test and service environments.

Unlike many organic or polymer-based protection systems, it does not soften, drip or generate fuel of its own — it simply stays solid and keeps insulating.

03Fire safety in enclosed compartments

Smoke and toxic gas kill more effectively than flame in the confined spaces of a vessel, vehicle or shelter. That is the argument for Mg(OH)2: it is halogen-free and non-toxic, it releases water rather than acid gas, and it forms a refractory MgO residue instead of burning.

  • Naval and vehicle interiors — cables, panels and composites with low smoke and zero halogen.

  • Field equipment and shelters — flame-retardant textiles, coatings and structural parts.

  • Corrosion advantage — no acid gas means sensitive electronics and steelwork survive the fire as well.
